The art style of the default tilesets causes map terrain to look blocky in comparison to RPG Maker XP's default tilesets which had curved cliffs. However, the ability to manually select the layer to use was removed, and was only restored in RPG Maker MZ. It is also the first in the RPG Maker series to switch to using mostly auto-tiles for creating maps, making it easier to create maps. It has features that were removed from RPG Maker XP, allowing for it to be easier to use. It is the successor to RPG Maker XP from 2005 and is succeeded by RPG Maker VX Ace in 2012. It was developed and published by Enterbrain in 2007 in Japan, and 2008 worldwide. RPG Maker VX is a software development program designed for creating role-playing video games.
